To prepare coconut coir for use as a mushroom substrate, you will need to hydrate and pasteurize it. The process is relatively simple and can be done with minimal equipment.

1. Start by measuring out the desired amount of coconut coir. For mushroom cultivation, a 1:1 ratio of coir to water is typically used.
2. In a clean container, mix the coconut coir with water. Use hot water (around 150-160F) to make the process faster, but it can also be done with room temperature water, it will just take longer.
3. Mix the coir and water until it becomes a homogeneous mixture and the coir is fully hydrated. It should have the consistency of a damp sponge.
4. Once the coir is hydrated, it needs to be pasteurized to kill any potential contaminants. You can do this by using a large pot, a thermometer, and a weight to keep the coir submerged.
