Podaxis pistillaris, also known as the desert shaggy mane, is native to the desert
regions of North America, Mexico, India as well as Australia. The desert tribes of
Australia used it to darken white hair, body painting, as well as a fly repellent.
Both fresh and dried mushrooms can be used medicinally. It is thought to be
beneficial in treating wounds as well and skin diseases.*

Podaxis pistillaris grows to be about 15 cm high with a hard and woody stem.
The cap is white and darkens to a tan or brown color as it ages. The spores are
black and are what was used as ink for body painting or darkening hair. It tends
to grow alone and prefers sandy areas.
