Hemlock Varnish Shelf (Ganoderma tsugae)
Hemlock Varnish Shelf (Ganoderma tsugae) is a type of bracket fungus that grows on the bark of hemlock trees. It has a shiny, varnished appearance and is typically brown or dark brown in color. The cap is circular and can grow up to 20 cm in diameter. The underside of the cap has a white, spongy texture and is where the spores are produced. Hemlock Varnish Shelf is a saprobic fungus, which means it obtains nutrients by breaking down dead or dying wood. It is not harmful to the tree but it is considered a sign of declining tree health.
