Blewit (Lepista nuda)
Lepista nuda, commonly known as Blewit is an edible mushroom native to
Europe and North America but can now increasingly be found in Australia where
it was introduced. Its color ranges from lilac to purple-pink that darkens as it
ages. Some North American species will have a duller color tending more
towards tan, but will still have purplish tones on the stem and gills. It has a
standard mushroom shape with a simple cap and a thick, short stem. Blewits
have a strong flavor and should be cooked before eating. They have a very
distinctive odor that has been likened to that of frozen orange juice.
Blewit has a long fruiting season during the cooler months of september until
freeze up. It typically takes more than a growing season to establish so it is best
to have it in a semi-permanent location. For same season fruiting, it should be
planted in early spring, however it can be planted in spring, fall or even winter in
milder climates. Layered hardwood and pine needle mixed with layers of leaves
and organic matter are ideal for growing Blewit.
