Conifer Tuft (Hypholoma capnoides)

Hypholoma capnoides, known as the Conifer Tuft grows throughout most of
mainland Europe and in North America. The genus name Hypholoma means
‘mushroom with threads’ as it has a thread-like partial veil that connects the cap
to the stem and also has a thread-like rhizomorphs that diverge from the stem.
The word capnoide is in reference to the smoky grey color of the gills as it means
‘looking like smoke’.
The conifer tuft is a saprobic mushroom, growing in small clusters or individually
on conifer stumps or buried or exposed roots of dead conifers. They have yellow
to orange to brown caps that grow up to 6cm in diameter. The gills are pale
orange when young turning pale grey when they mature and eventually turning
darker purple/brown with spores that are dark brown. The have a mild taste and
