Funcia di basiliscu (Pleurotus nebrodensis)
Grow your own edible and medicinal Funcia di basiliscu mushrooms with liquid
Pleurotus nebrodensis or Funcia di basiliscu is a mushroom in the Oyster family.
As its common name might suggest, it is native to Italy and is in fact considered
endangered. It only grows on limestone in northern Sicily and in an area of less
than 100 square kilometers (39 sq mi). It is estimated that only about 250
Pleurotus nebrodensis reach maturity each year.
The mushroom is cream white to yellow in color with a diameter reaching
between 5 and 20cm. Its gills are extremely angled and the cap surface breaks
as it reaches maturity. It was described as being the most delicious mushroom of
the Sicilian mycological flora. Being that it is so endangered and so delicious, it is
definitely worth it to grow your own!
