Lentinus lepideus, more commonly known as the train wrecker, is native to North
America and Europe but has also been found in parts Africa, Asia and Australia.
It was nicknamed the train wrecker as it is often found growing on train tracks,
decomposing the railroad ties. Now, a lot of the wood is treated to prevent growth
of fungus, but the train wrecker will sometimes even break down the
preservatives! For that reason, it is used in researching the efficacy of wood
Train wrecker grows on dead and decaying coniferous wood with a preference
for pine. It will grow singly or in clusters. It is an important woodland decomposer
as it is very effective in breaking down wood, causing brown rot. It has a tough,
fleshy fruit body that is edible, especially when young. Its cap is white or creamy,
convex when young, flattening as it matures and growing up to about 12 cm. The
stem grows to about 8 cm in height.
