Agrocybe aegerita, more commonly known as pioppino or black poplar, is native to the southeastern states of the U.S and southern Europe. However, it has become a very popular mushroom and is now being cultivated across Asia, Europe, Australia and U.S. It has shown many medicinal benefits and is rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. It contains high amounts of Copper and Vitamin B5 but also contains Folate, Biotin, Niacin, Selenium, Potassium and Riboflavin. It has been shown to slow down the effect of osteoporosis and help the body fight infection with its antiseptic properties.* Traditionally, the chinese used it for support of the kidneys, the spleen and stomach.

The black poplar grows primarily on or around poplar trees, hence the name. It tends to grow in dense clusters with a white stem and golden-brown cap. A highly prized and versatile mushroom, it has a delicious sweet and nutty flavor. It is best to consume when young. It can be used to help decompose stumps and can be grown on supplemented hardwood (alder, oak, cottonwood, maple, willow, poplar) wood chips mixed with sawdust. Fruiting temperature is between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
