Morchella esculenta, more commonly known as the yellow morel, can be found
across North America, Europe and China. It has been used in traditional chinese
medicine to treat indigestion, phlegm and shortness of breath. It is rich in proteins
and minerals and is a prized culinary mushrooms with a high price tag to go
along with it. It is delicious and has also been found to have several medicinal
properties. Why wouldn’t you want to grow it for yourself?

The yellow morel tends to grow under hardwoods for a short period in the spring.
It tends to grow in disturbed grounds and burnt areas. The fruit body grows to
about 10-15 cm high, sometimes larger. It has a rounded cap with honeycomb
like grooves and a greyish to pale yellow-brown color. The stem is whitish to
cream, and well developed that will brown with age. It must be cooked before
consuming. It can be fried in butter or stuffed and baked. Yum! It is not the
easiest mushroom to grow but is definitely worth it! It can be grown by burning
sawdust and added to a mixture of soil and it prefers cooler temperatures.
