Description
White Millet For Mushroom cultivation
Out-Grow's premium white millet is a fine-grain substrate favored by mushroom cultivators for its exceptional colonization characteristics. Millet's small, uniform kernel size creates a high surface area to volume ratio, allowing mycelium to spread rapidly and evenly throughout the grain mass. This makes it one of the fastest colonizing grain substrates available, particularly well suited for species that thrive on fine grain including oyster, shiitake, lion's mane, and many gourmet and exotic varieties.
The naturally high starch and nutrient content of white millet provides mycelium with an ideal food source throughout colonization, producing dense, vigorous grain spawn that transfers efficiently to bulk substrate. At 5lbs per bag, you have enough to run multiple jars or bags simultaneously across several cultivation projects.
Millet is also a preferred choice for liquid culture inoculations due to its small kernel size, making it easier to distribute spawn evenly during the shaking process compared to larger grains like rye or wheat.
Preparation: Rinse millet thoroughly until water runs clear. Simmer on the stovetop for 15-20 minutes until kernels are hydrated but firm — do not allow to split or become mushy. Drain and surface dry until no visible moisture remains. Load into jars or grain bags, sterilize at 15 PSI for 90 minutes, cool completely, then inoculate with your chosen culture.
