Phellinus igniarius, also known as the willow bracket, is native to Europe
North-America and East Asia. In chinese medicine, it was used to support the
liver, the bladder and the meridian. It was consumed in the form of tea to treat
issues with the urinary tract and minimize bleeding. The indigenous people of
North America used it as a cure for stomach pain as well as a laxative. It was
also prized as kindling.

The willow bracket is a polypore, commonly occurring on willow, hence the
name. It can also be found growing on birch, alder, and other broad leafed trees
and it causes white rot. It has a hard, woody consistency and is shaped like a
hoof. It is dark in color and often has a cracked crust. The stem is only present
when it is young. It is considered inedible but teas and decoctions can be made
to reap the health benefits. It can be grown by inoculating logs or on
